چکیده

Archived data from the WSR-88D network of weather radars in the US hold detailed information about the continent-scale migratory movements of birds over the last 20 years. However, significant technical challenges must be overcome to understand this information and harness its potential for science and conservation. We present an approximate Bayesian inference algorithm to reconstruct the velocity fields of birds migrating in the vicinity of a radar station. This is part of a larger project to quantify bird migration at large scales using weather

Reconstructing Velocities of Migrating Birds from Weather Radar - A Case Study in Computational Sustainability

SUMMER 2014 31 Ecological processes that occur at global scales are among the most impressive natural phenomena on Earth; they link environments across the globe and capture the imagination of observers. For example, billions of North American birds, representing more than 400 species, migrate annually, often thousands of miles, frequently under the cover of darkness, between breeding and nonbr...

P6.4 Polarimetric Prototype of the Wsr-88d Radar Observations of Birds and Insects

Biological echoes are treated as contamination like ground or sea clutters by radar meteorologists as they estimate rainfall intensities or assimilate radar reflectivity into numerical forecast model. Doppler velocity measured by radar in the presence of small insects well represents air motion because small insects are considered as passive tracers. But in the presence of birds especially migr...

P5.13 Detection of Birds and Insects Using Polarimetric Radar Observation

It has been known that polarimetric radar can discriminate biological and meteorological scatterers. Furthermore, Zrnic and Ryzhkov (1998) have shown that the polarimetric properties of small Rayleigh scatterers like insects and large non-Rayleigh scatterers like birds are significantly different. Vaughn (1985) has stated that prolate spherical water drops are a better model of birds and insect...

Functional Brain Response to Emotional Muical Stimuli in Depression, Using INLA Approach for Approximate Bayesian Inference

Introduction: One of the vital skills which has an impact on emotional health and well-being is the regulation of emotions. In recent years, the neural basis of this process has been considered widely. One of the powerful tools for eliciting and regulating emotion is music. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) is part of the emotional neural circuitry involved in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)....

A Soft-Input Soft-Output Target Detection Algorithm for Passive Radar

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel scheme for multi-static passive radar processing, based on soft-input soft-output processing and Bayesian sparse estimation. In this scheme, each receiver estimates the probability of target presence based on its received signal and the prior information received from a central processor. The resulting posterior target probabilities are transmitted to the c...
